But it’s not something that can happen to us, in fact, we don’t even think about that relative, friend, boss… we were talking about at the beginning, who might also possibly This is a problem.

Sometimes one receives the information, connects and accepts the shock with anguish and concern. if this issue is also present in our close environment, but we quickly forget it or once again justify it. What happens to us is that we don’t want to talk or think about addiction, because it causes us special discomfort, fear or even shame.

You may be interested in: Frequently asked questions about addiction treatments

This is where I can tell you that there is a special taboo to talk about this subject. of addictions. (Taboo is: Anything that is forbidden to do or say, whether by religious, psychological or social convention).

Where does the taboo on addiction stem from?

There are many studies showing the use of some substances such as alcohol and drugs. as a means of entertainment and socialization, as well as social beliefs such as that love is suffering and giving everything for the other to be loved, or that working hard is synonymous with responsibility, having a perfect body is synonymous with beauty, that playing is fun, taking care of what you eat and dieting is synonymous with healthy and so a number of things that have been planted in our heads in the society in which we live, but also since the time of the conquest is spoken that serve for the This is how it goes from being easily an amusement to a condition that is associated with social strata, education, a problem of race and even of moral or ethical character.

These perceptions have led us to see addiction not as what it really is: a DISEASE, but as a reason for criticism, a lack of character, a loser, something and someone reprehensible, causing discomfort and shame within a family.

It is as if in the case of addiction there is a stain that floods the person, the dignity of his family and even the good name of both. This has always led us not only to avoid, but also to judge, to suffer, to blame ourselves, to cover up, to deny that this reality affects us and in the end we leads to not speaking directly about the problem, nor taking measures to solve it.

You may be interested in: Brújula Rehabilitation Center

Addiction treatment

The fact that addictions are still a taboo subject is something that makes it very difficult to treat any type of addiction or addiction. psychological and/or emotional problems. Addiction is defined as a loss of control and freedom with respect to thought, action or consumption of a substance; this means that the person with addiction loses not only their freedom to choose how, when, with whom and where to consume but also their perception of reality, their ability to solve problems and even their identity.

This is why the family and people close to the addict play such an important role in the process of acceptance and recovery of the addict. That is why if we do not understand that talking about addiction, in the family, with our partner, with friends and even with ourselves should not be difficult and shameful, because what cures the disease of addiction is to accept it, to work psychologically, emotionally and spiritually in that void that we need to fill the only thing we are achieving is that the “what people will say” will be perpetuated for many generations only the 5% of the population is the one that ends up daring to break the taboo, talk about it directly and ask for help.

“Any thought or action that becomes an obsession can become an addiction.”

By:

Laura Serna.

Laurasernaterapeuta@gmail.com

Drugs and addictions are a taboo subject in our culture, recognizing them and identifying our emotional problems are the first step to solve them.

[145,144

post-7399","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog-en","category-preventive-mental-health-care

Taboo to talk about addiction problems |Brújula Salud Mental

<meta property="og:title" content="The TABU to discuss Obsessive behaviors and thinking.
