In the clinical practice of addictions, we see a significant increase in the number of alcohol-related consultations. We could say that out of 10 people who consult for addiction difficulties, 7 of them present difficulties with alcohol consumption.

Alcohol is a psychoactive substance in which man has, since its origins, found the possibility of:

Among others. In our current society this is still in force and ends up being associated with social events and entertainment venues.

The availability, social representations and constructions that are made from it lead us to understand that alcohol is more than alcohol.

There is something implicit in it that makes its consumption attractive.

Social status, social pressure, normalization in different contexts such as family, work and social contexts have allowed us to approach it at an early age, becoming familiar with it and turning it into a tool that begins to serve to adapt to different situations and contexts.

But the problem itself is not the alcohol but the relationship that the person establishes with it.

The choice of an effect obtained in a substance is not gratuitous, it is chosen from a personality structure that finds in these effects the medication or the way in which it conveys or processes its feelings and emotions.

We have always said that addiction to a substance, activity or relationship is a symptom, not the problem itself, it is generated from many situations of organic, psychological, family, social, cultural, psychiatric pathologies among others.

It is an indicator that something is not working well and requires attention.

This warns us in many ways, such as increased consumption in quantity and frequency, abstinence periods are becoming shorter and shorter, and performance areas such as the following are affected:

Among others. Non-attendance and non-compliance with previously acquired commitments.

Obsession and compulsion occur, that is to say, the person begins to drink liquor and it is difficult for him/her to suspend his/her behavior, he/she cannot stop, loses his/her limits, has no capacity to face consequences, does not structure limits.

Even knowing the consequences that may occur, he ends up repeating the cycle over and over again, succeeded by guilt, “moral guayabo”, depression, feelings of helplessness, overwhelm and promises himself not to repeat his behavior, but this only lasts a few days since he will repeat it again.

The WHO (World Health Organization) defines it as a physical, psychological and emotional illness. That it exceeds the capacity to limit itself by its own means to suspend the behavior. The person is governed by a strong physical and psychological dependence.

You may be interested in: Substance use in young people.

Experts in the field should be consulted. Initial treatment for alcoholism is medical.

The withdrawal syndrome produced by this substance is complex and can trigger different physical and psychological signs and symptoms that require medication and medical, toxicological, psychiatric and nutritional care.

Since the organism presents multiple decompensations that can endanger the life and integrity of the consumer.

Once the person is medically stabilized, psychological, family and therapeutic treatment is proposed at the same time.

They allow him/her to detoxify, to dishabit many associations and behaviors, to know and elaborate the reasons that give strength to his/her problems in order to link him/her to a functional life project.

You may be interested in: Outpatient Program – Addiction Treatment

By:

Juan Carlos Giraldo Ramírez

Addictions Specialist

A curious case of alcohol addiction
