The latter refer to repetitive and obsessive patterns of behavior that progressively increase and move away from the possibility of being controlled. The symptoms generate discomfort, anxiety and gradually begin to affect the functionality in the areas of performance such as family, work, social, emotional, economic, among others.

They are an irrational impulse to perform a certain behavior over and over again, even knowing that it generates discomfort or affects the external environment or oneself. Not doing it or refraining from it is followed by discomfort, irritability, uneasiness and a feeling of anguish that can only be relieved by repeating the action.

The WHO (World Health Organization) defines addiction as a biological and psycho-emotional disease, generated by multiple aspects. also says that an addiction manifests itself in three ways:

In the consumption of some type of substance.

2. In the links to dependent affective relationships that are not in equilibrium.

3. In behaviors or behaviors that generate obsessive and irrational activities.

The 21st century has opened the doors to virtuality. Today, new technologies and the Internet are within the reach of all those who have the resources to access them. It is then, when the so-called addictions to the Internet, social networks, cell phones, video games and others, are not long in coming.

To these can be added some slightly older addictions, whose symptoms are exacerbated by the times in which we find ourselves; these addictions are: compulsive gambling, sex addiction, work addiction, shopping addiction and food addiction.

Characteristics of behavioral addictions

Many people believe that whoever is addicted has decided to be addicted and that at any moment he/she can leave the dependency with the same ease with which he/she entered it, but no, dependency does not operate under that logic.

Initially, the person engages in a behavior based on the search for immediate satisfaction, but as time goes by, the compulsive exercise of this behavior escapes any possible control and, in the absence of its realization, discomfort becomes imminent.

Thus, the individual who becomes dependent for example to shopping, does not stop shopping even if he has taken on an amount of debt, because regardless of the negative consequences of his behavior, on a mental and emotional level there is a “satisfaction”; that is, in the act of shopping, something is supposedly forgotten, made up, filled, repaired, avoided, but the pain in addiction comes with the realization that none of that actually happens.

Those who immerse themselves in the world of video games may be seeking to escape from the reality they inhabit, because it may be too painful.

Therefore, any addiction is based on a problematic, given by significant events in the subject’s history, events that instead of being elaborated, named and re-signified, were repressed in the trunk of memory and which are given a place in the addiction.

Examples of behavioral addictions

The most common behavioral addictions that we find in clinical practice are: Pathological gambling or gambling addiction, addiction to new technologies, cell phone, addiction to video games, shopping, social networks, work, to sexThe company is also involved in pornography, sports, cosmetic surgeries, among others.

Consequences of behavioral addictions

Any addiction has the potential to affect different areas of people. Behavioral addictions are sometimes minimized, since they are socially accepted behaviors, they are legal and it is believed that since they are not consuming any substance, they are less serious and generate less deterioration. This is not true, behavioral addictions, like any other addiction, gradually and progressively destroy the stability of the sufferer to the point of losing his or her own peace of mind, affecting relationships and/or family and work relationships, economic problems, debts, physical and health deterioration, suicide, as well as triggering or predisposing mental illnesses such as depression, among others.

Treatment for behavioral addictions

Addiction is a symptom, the problem is not the behavior but the relationship and meaning that the person gives to it. What are the motives or reasons why the person resorts to them. Usually what you think is the problem is not really the problem. Behind an addiction there are always unresolved aspects of a history, family, personality. Treatment for any addiction begins with acceptance of the addiction, genuine recognition of the problem and acceptance of help.

Change is not for those who need it, but for those who really want it. Once the person accepts his or her condition and is willing to receive help, an assessment must be made to diagnose the state of addiction, evaluate the mental state, behavioral patterns, associated dysfunctionality and several other aspects in order to determine the treatment strategy that best suits the person’s situation. These processes are accompanied by a team of professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists specialized in addictions, family professionals, pedagogues, therapists, among others.

The person must be accompanied in a comprehensive manner from different areas in order to help him/her resolve his/her situation.

Adahara Cárdenas Palacios / Juan Carlos Giraldo

Psychologists.

Behavioral addictions refer to repetitive and obsessive patterns of behavior that progressively increase.
